Title: Subaccounts
Post by: Mari-chi on January 17th, 2013, 08:32 PM
This was touched on a long time ago, but I thought I'd ask again since I'm not up to date on the features that are being considered, or have been accepted/rejected.

I was wondering if there were any plans to make something like SD's Subaccounts for Wedge as a feature? It'd be really great to have, but since I'm no developer, I don't know how much work would need to go into it, and whether it would be worth it in the end. Of course, if someone decides to convert SD's Subaccounts to Wedge, that would be terrific and all. ^^

It's a super important feature for RPers, so I thought I'd put it out there. 8D

It won't be core. It will be a plugin. It may or may not be free. If it is not free, it will not be any more than $20 or so as a one off payment.

I can't port the plugin; I'm not allowed to do so by its licence but in any case the amount of changes mean it's closer to a rewrite than a port.

$20 sounds good to me... adding my request as well :eheh:

I was thinking of making one eventually.

*shrug* perhaps, also depends on when I'll get this thing started.

Yaaaay! <3 If it was free, that'd be awesome, but for about $20, it wouldn't be a bad deal at all. XD

And does this call for a game of rock, paper, scissors? ^0^

Nah, it's simply whoever gets to it first, though first doesn't necessarily mean only - though we tend to talk to each other and discuss things like that.

I have bits of a 'switch permissions' mod already written (for testing what permissions another group has) but it relies on fixing a bug in the core that I haven't gotten to yet.

If it's going to call for a game, I vote Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock.

I don't know how to play either of those.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock - the basic RPS version is much the same.

I would definitely advise the inclusion of a sub account option. SMF is becoming more common as a platform for PBP RPG, and the use of the sub account mod is a pretty major part of that, I think.

On a personal level, I wouldn't go anywhere near a forum system without sub accounts waiting for me when I got there, as an RPer and as an Admin.

I would have said free would be the best way to go with it, because SMF's still works and Jcink has their version too. That said, I don't think a small fee would be awful, just annoying lol. I will buy, and have bought, mods and stuff, but it's not something I like doing and I'd be more inclined toward a free option than a paying, in most cases.

Just some more input :)

The small fee is less about profiteering and more about keeping out the malcontents, as has been discussed more than once here.

The problem with making everything free is that it's got to come from somewhere, and it's got to be supported - and I do not want to spend vast amounts of my time doing support when I want to be writing things. Thus, putting a small fee on some plugins (the most intractable and complex, and typically niche) ones means that I don't have to answer a bajillion support requests, especially from people who seem to be under the delusion that I owe them something because they're using something I made for them - something surprisingly common out of my SMF mod history.

Oh, I'm not saying you shouldn't or that it wouldn't be well earned. Like I said, I've bought a few mods for my site and it's something I'm happy to do if I think the mod is worth it. But it'll always be something I groan about too, lol. :P

All said and done, definitely make sure the system gets a SubAccount mod, whether its free or part of the package or paid for or what have you. It would more than definitely be worth the effort it takes.

Well, I don't think you're gonna get any competition any time soon ;)

Ahem...

If I may....

If you'd like a helping hand, I do have a personal use copy of subaccounts that has been modified for SMF 2.0.4. ;)

Hmm... does it use as many hooks as possible?

No. I just modified the original, making it so could be used on my site.
Incidentally, I ended up closing down that site for inactivity. :(

I've never worked with hooks yet... Maybe I should start soon....LOL
