An electronics forum I go to uses a plain jane SMF install so I offered the Admin to spice it up with some better new post/no new post icons (see attached) more oriented towards electronics. I chose to make them oscilloscope displays with and without a signal.
Well he really liked them, so he PM'ed me back that he uploaded them but nothing changed. :sob:
Well, first of all, I only linked him to two of the needed files since I didn't want to waste time making all of them yet until I knew he liked them. Second, I have no idea where he "uploaded" them to. :hmm:
I just sent him a full set of files and the specific path to upload the files. Sometimes these people scare me. :o
I'm sitting here refreshing his forum waiting for his icons to change ...
Oh Dear - Now it shows 504 Gateway Time-out!

504 is when there's a timeout happening between the request getting to nginx, being passed on to whatever to handle it, and it getting back to nginx. Interesting... I wonder if the site is actually using nginx + PHP/FPM or using nginx as a reverse proxy to Apache. Might be interesting to find out.

So I got up this morning and I finally saw the icons on that forum. So I thought whew, glad that got resolved. I PMed the Admin and said they looked great! He said "I still don't see them!"
:huh:
I said refresh your browser and you should see them, I see them here just fine.
He PM'ed back a few minutes later "Oh now I see them - thanks!"

Yes, browser caches are wonderful things - until someone who doesn't understand tries to change something that is cached.

He doing backups of the database from within the Admin panel, as there's a thread about the 504 gateway errors and he mentioned doing it that way, and I think it's causing problems for him. I need to tell him to not do it that way and do it from Cpanel. :)

a lot of smf admin do not know what they should because they dont think to ask and smf developers dont always consider all server configs before features like the db backup are added. sure a warning could be added but because the feature exists more admin will use it anyway.
it is like most admin will complain if an image is missing but not know how to try to figure out what the image is or where it should be. their browser can help out a lot and could save a lot of time/effort.

It's been a long time since actual technical competence were a requirement for running a website. :(

The guy running that electronics forum is very smart in the electronics field. But expertise in one technical area doesn't mean you can jump to another technical area and know everything you need to know. With these forums there's quite a bit of knowledge you need to really do things the best way. I've been doing it for quite a few years and I still come across new problems and solutions.
Case in point: My neighbor across the street doesn't know a lot about computers and so he calls on me to help him all the time with things such as Firefox, Windows, the PC hardware, all of which I'm fairly competent with. He thinks I'm like the best genius about it all there is .
But today he wanted me to help him do some sort of combining of trees operation with his Ancestry.com work, on the website, because his subscription runs out in 3 days. I looked at it and had to tell him "Truthfully, I don't have a fucking clue about how Ancestry.com works and I have no idea what you are doing or have done. You better ask them for the help". I was sorry I couldn't help but it would have taken me all day to come up to speed on how that place works, if even then.
