Title: I know what. I can't figure out how to ask how.
Post by: lazyt on August 23rd, 2012, 10:32 PM
You ever have an idea but then you can't figure out a search query to ask how?

I run a few tool forums. Spanners not bands.

The members collect and pdf early tool catalogs.

My question is there a script that would let me set up a central point to host them at? They would be on a different server then the forums.

It would ready be nice if they could look at them online as well.

Also I would prefer to just have staff be able to upload or approve them for download.

Aeva Media does all of that, AFAIK. (Version 2.1x at least.)
And Wedge, of course. :P
If you're going to host on a different server, you'll have to provide a download link after uploading by FTP or something. Otherwise I don't really see how it could work...

Hosting on a different server basically means you couldn't really handle approval unless they had the relevant upload details. It would just be easiest to use Aeva Media.

See what I mean about not being able to explain the idea?

I had thought of Aeva but the guys on the sites never used anything but the embedding functions so I never bought the full version before it was merged into Wedge.

I was just thinking about doing a stand alone site and linking to it from the forums. I have a VPS account I've just been playing with relearning server setups. Eh I'm not making any sense even to my self. I could easily host them on either of the forums. I'm just paranoid and like to spread things out to prevent failure points.

Even the free version of Aeva can deal with uploading and serving of files...

I think he's not looking for that but for more than that... Something that can't be done by any software because of a technical 'issue'.

"“Actually of the free version can handle the files it will work fine. "

I have to admit I never really played with Aeva too find out every thing it could do.

Sigh another learning curve to beat. Actually it sounds like fun.

Thanks guys, I posted this since I knew I had myself confused trying to make things too complex. It's a character fault of mine.

You did exactly what I had hoped for and pointed out a direction.

Believe me, learning to use AeMe is about a million times easier than writing the whole damn thing in the first place

To tell you the truth I don't even begin to understand how you did it.

The amount of dedication it took amazes me. Then you had to deal with the users.

Lol, I was one of those that suffered the 'Wrath of Nao' for asking[1] a simple question!

But still I stuck with him because, like you say, his dedication, let alone his skills in producing amazing applications[2], is incredible!

I really can't wait to get my hands on Wedge![3]
 1. What I thought was!
 2. Even though he is sometimes a grumpy bastard!
 3. Thanks to Pete too!

Note that both Nao and I get full of wrath not because of simple questions. It's never just because of a simple question.

The usual cause is when it's a simple question that has already been answered and no effort has been put in ahead of asking, e.g. it's in the FAQ, or a simple search will definitely find it. Or, worst of all, you've managed to ignore the 18pt high, bold, bright red letters and still proceed to carry out the operation, and are then surprised (or even full of self-righteous wrath) when it doesn't work as expected.

I'll admit I am bad about trying the do not do stuff just to see what happens.

But I do it on a spare computer here at the house. Not on a production server.

Some of the stuff I read on support forums saddens me for the future of the human race.

I love the ones on the hosting forums where they are crying about the servers being shut down 21 days after the due date.

Mine wasn't quite that bad, or simple, but I still had to crawl away and die somewhere! lol (It was a steep learning curve which has now been learnt!

(Can I just say that a lot of the smilies come up in French when hovering) (waits for 'wrath')

I do that too. Again I do it on a spare computer and I do so knowing full well it's likely going to be messy. Doing it because of not being bothered enough to read the advice put in front of you, or thinking it does not apply to you is going to cause a LOT of frustration.

Did you see the thread where I was flat out called clueless?

I credited you with a bit more intelligence than to ask a really straightforward question :)

Sure you can, because it's true. Customised smileys, as such, get input in the language of the person creating them. There's no multi-language support by definition for such things.

Arantor I seem to remember a few of them where the user was basically saying you didn't know how the program worked when you tried to help them.

I really don't blame developers for getting disgusted and giving up on people after experiences like that.

There is an old Quad sitting in the corner that has had a few hard drives replaced. My wife says I wear them out installing and experimenting with OS's and scripts. It's just hooked into the house network enough for me to access it from my laptop. If I bork it totally Oh Shucks I wanted to try this new distro anyway. lol

French I don't mind popping up. I can sometimes remember enough to figure out what it means.

Side note. Nao all the mentioning of Garlic sausages has to be some kind of psych war ops. I miss small stuff like that here in the land of plastic food.

It's happened enough times now. I'm just waiting for the time when someone says the same to me about Wedge. Especially if it's in relation to the plugin system.

You, sadly, are the minority. There are people that flat out believe that we, as developers, actually owe them something, for nothing.

Heh, same here.

It's not a psych war op. It is simply that he likes garlic sausage :)

I miss the foods in Europe. The stuff here in the USA is so over processed it kills the flavours and textures.

If you make it yourself then problem solved ;)

To be truly solved you have raise, butcher and process everything yourself. Heck I do it part of the time just to show the kids what real food tastes like. My one daughter hated eggs until I finally talked her into trying free range eggs. Now she asks if we have any real eggs in the house.

The biggest problem is it kills them on eating the food at restaurants and friends houses. With the first bunch of kids I would walk into the kitchen and they would start going "Real food! We're having Real Food today!"
