Did something crazy over the weekend; Steam were offering all of Paradox's published games (which includes Magicka which I already owned) for a ridiculous price - £74.99 for all the games and all their DLC.
Several of them I'd already looked at and made a note for later that I'd get them, but instead I took the plunge. There is a side benefit to this approach, there are games in there I wouldn't have encountered at all otherwise, and I'm finding it's a nice change of pace to try games out that I wouldn't necessarily have tried.
More than that, it does provide a nice source of inspiration, because it means that I'm seeing how different games handle different things, and while it might not seem obvious at all, I find I do get inspired by how different games approach different concepts, and in the most unlikely of ways.
I mean, I've often considered games to have had the benefit of better UI designers than most application authors, simply because they have to do something more imaginative than simply throwing a load of buttons on the screen, and most of the games I've played have relatively sane UIs to them, and I find that quite inspirational.
I guess it's just nice to do something different to what I'd normally do. Variety is, as they say, the spice of life.
I don't think the offer is running any more, and to be honest I'd be surprised if most people here would bother, since I suspect most people here know what they like and like most people, often don't venture beyond it. I don't, generally, but it's nice to man up and try it occasionally...

It seems running:

Have fun, Pete! :)
Btw: You know that the avatars in message inbox are shown twice here at wegde.org?

No, the Paradox Complete Pack is no longer available now, but it was a pretty epic deal.

That's what was wonderful about the Potato Sack that Steam offered for Portal 2. I otherwise would've never gotten to play wonderful indie games like Bit.Trip Beat or AaaAaaaAaaaAAAaaaaAAAh! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity.
It's why Valve is such an amazing company. Their first and most important goal is providing for the users, and in the end it benefits both them and us. Not to mention you feel awesome saving absolutely silly amounts of money and get great games.

Steam's awesome, I even haven't played half of the games I've got(Don't think I'll ever), but I still got them since they were quote a steal.

Well I wish I could find a good game or two to play these days I am having a hard time finding any >:(

The only game on my machine is a port of Doom2 called Zdoom, which I play about once every couple of months. I get bored with it and then I go look and there's thousands of WAD files out there, some of which are true labors of love. For some reason I keep going back when I need a game fix.
I'm from the Wolfenstein generation. :niark:

I think Doom made me wanna buy my first PC...
Second Reality closed the deal, though.

When it came out, and you could play against your friends via modem... that was HUGE for me and a couple of friends of mine. My one buddy ran a BBS, as did I, and so we'd connect our computers on the BBS line, and we could talk on the voice line, and we'd play into the wee hours. Those were some good times!
