For years, I've held an account at my first proper paid webhosting service, and they've run my email ever since - that's since 2003.
When I joined them, everything was fantastic, service was prompt and I couldn't recommend them enough. But over the last couple of years they've really gone downhill, and today was the final straw.
For 24 hours straight, the email server's been down, the web-mail login is broken because they didn't set it up properly, that is assuming I'm willing to overlook the fact that they're using self-signed certificates for all their servers... I say servers, but I think they only have one server these days.
Since my old old old site is virtually non existent anyway, I'm now in the process of migrating the email to another provider, and moving the website to my VPS. Given the hoops I've had to jump through to get my old email archive given that their mail service is broken, I can see today is going to be a very, very long day :(

Try gmail.
-
Not a chance, no. Been there, done that, don't like GMail for a bunch of reasons.
-
Explain! :)
-
It would mean tying my computer into the Googleplex more than it already is. Why would I want to give them personally identifiable details tied to all my searches?
You know, also that G+ issues have caused peoples' accounts to be frozen, why would I risk that? (Not that I've done anything to prompt it, but given the kinds of insanity that Google are doing at the moment, why would I even go near doing that when I can for less hassle go elsewhere and get a service that's closer to what I want and need.)

Really? Google apps mail + mail client is the best thing ever.

Not everybody agrees, some still prefer to use Outlook over GMail. (Which GMail support).
-
I've given it a try and I can honestly say I don't like it. In any case, I use Thunderbird primarily for managing email.

Isn't outlook a mail client?
-
Yes, he was referring to the "+ mail client" part, I think.
-
GMail is great, the only problem I have with GMail is that it's does not support multiple mail forwarding. I only use Outlook just to do multiple mail forwarding.
Also I can access GMail on my iPhone via MS Exchange.

You kind of lost me. What I was saying was : Gmail coupled with a mail client like thunderbird, outlook, apple mail, KMail etc is a very nice combination because gmail has a reliable service and it supports ms exchange.

The main thing that I'm starting to dislike about Google's services is that everything is tied to one central account. While this is not a bad thing most of the time, it does prevent me from having another Gmail address. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I love using Gmail, but I can't use it for all of my needs. I can't have a personal Gmail address, one to give out to employers and other professionals, and one to give out to services that require an email address. And after trying to create a dummy account to tie to an email it seems that they deleted it.
-
I have two e-mail addresses at gmail, maybe their policy was different in the past... I'm still using only one of them though, and using the other as a privacy tool.
-
I think it was changed. When I was researching how to do it all of the solutions were just very inconvenient solutions that required the use of an email account somewhere else anyways. It's a shame, really.
-
On many of the sites I manage I also use Google Apps (I just point MX entries to Google servers) and I have my @website.ext email addresses but i don't have to worry about configuration and other things
-
So does this host have a name so we can all remember to maybe avoid them  :eheh:
-
The old host is CyberPixels.
-
Thanks I don't know them but it is always handy to know who to stay away from
-
*nods* What sucks is that they used to be so good.
-
That does suck especially when you have all your stuff sorted out with them. The one host that really sucked for me was 1&1 http://order.1and1.com/
-
What did you end up with?
-
Well, the webhost I moved pretty trivially to my existing VPS (which was fine since that old webhost had almost zero traffic) but the fun was moving all my mail, which is now with FastMail.fm.
-
The email address is always the biggest issue as you need to advise people of the new one and you always seem to miss some of those importing ones
-
I don't have to advise anyone of anything; I kept the same email address I've had for most of a decade (perks of owning your own domain and so on)
But I did miss a folder during import. It's not a huge deal since I do have said folder on my local computer, it's just whether I can be bothered farting around resetting up the IMAP stuff in order for me to redownload it and reupload it to the new service.
(I have learned more about how email works in the last few days than I've had to know in years. It's one of the few systems that amazes me that it actually works at all.)

A good choice. I've been with them for years with few problems. Less than 2 days of downtime in total over at least 3 years for me.
-
Fastmail is the one owned by Opera. Right? ;)
-
Yes, yes it is. I thought that might amuse you.

It was totally good before Opera too.
But it is totally good with Opera at the helm too.
-
Too bad it's not free, though...
I mean, 25MB isn't exactly much. I've been on gmail only for a couple of years, and I already have at least 500MB of e-mails on it. I switched to gmail precisely so I wouldn't have to delete all of my e-mails as they're read and answered, especially the ones with attachments...
-
I deliberately started out by going to one of their paid plans up front, because I wanted to manage through my domain ($34.95/yr) and that still ends up cheaper than my old hosting account.

I like how you picked the exact same kind of subscription as me. I too have my own domain. I use gmail for most internet signups and the like, and Fastmail for srsbusiness.
PROTIP: Aliases are godlike for making temporary e-mail addresses. Great for shady deals (as in, signups and people you don't trust to handle your address with care).
-
Gmail protip: use myaddress+myalias@gmail.com to get your own aliases... :eheh:
I guess spam harvesters will/would know to delete anything after the '+', but shh!
-
I have the choice of both with Fastmail :P
