Title: Google Plus
Post by: DirtRider on August 15th, 2011, 02:40 PM
Anyone had a look at Google plus. I have started using it and think it is much better than FB especially as you can arrange you friends into different groups and just post to any groups you want.

I've used it. But I'm increasingly hearing horror stories that make FB look tame by comparison.

Such as the fact that your public posts are being tied into search. So your searches are being tagged explicitly as yours, and remember you have to use your real name on Google+.

Just remember: the adage of 'if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear' doesn't really ring true. Everyone should fear because very soon if things continue as they are, you will have no ability to hide anything from anyone again. Every action will be transparent, to someone. And that someone will likely be a private company that can effectively bar you at will. Not a pretty prospect, is it.

Just posting my avatar to gplus made my email address associated to my name in google searches. Yay for privacy...

Privacy is a real concern with all of these social sites and as you say it seems that it is becoming more and more transparent at every step.

More and more transparent that we don't have much privacy going forward. People don't sign up to social sites to have every aspect of their social lives being joined together.

This can be done on FB as well, you create 'lists' and add you friends to the lists and you can post/share to any list(s) of your choosing.

Not quite the same way. A list in FB is a mutual thing because the relationship defined is two way - on G+ you can set up a list of people without having to explicitly follow them.

I think I see what you mean[1], on FB to not follow someone you'd have to hide each individual from your wall, I don't think there is a way to hide/not follow a 'list' of people. You can however have a list that cannot see any of your posts, etc.
 1. haven't used G+ though

I'll give G+ their dues, the overall implementation of G+ is pretty solid in terms of making it clear who can see what. The fact that the Googleplex drags the kitchen sink into it is a separate problem entirely.

That would put us in the same group as Google, not a comparison I'm favourable to, seeing how they're very firmly bending the definition of evil...
Yeah, I read your blog. :p

The thing is, not only did a bunch of people consider that that was a good idea, but the same bunch of people then convinced more people to build it, and then to convince everyone else that somehow tying all your data into their search engine isn't at least a little evil - and no-one questioned this at the time?! >_<
What kind of data? I looked up myself on Google to see if they show results of my data, there was none. :/

This is my profile: https://plus.google.com/117163665721006562027/about

It could be because my Search visibility is opt-out?

Yup, you've turned it off, but were you signed into Google at the time out of interest?

You mean when Google launched G+? I have turned the option off, yes, before they announced and integrated G+ into search results.

Not sure what you are telling me.

This will be my first go ahead for any sort of social machine (FB,Twitter,Myspace etc). Cannot compare it to anything or have yet to see if it is useful for anything :)
