Title: IE users are dumb
Post by: Arantor on July 29th, 2011, 11:44 PM
No, that's not just some rhetoric from me about IE users being too dumb to use a better browser.

Apparently a study has been done, as reported in http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/29/aptiquant_iq_survey/ showing that the average IQ of IE users is lower than those of other browsers.

Nao, take note: the Opera users, on average, have the highest IQ!

I actually see that on mashable I guess, and I found it hilarious :P

Lol very funny.

I'm not surprised though. I have an iq of 179. :niark:

Iq could also be based on the number of opened tabs i'm sure.

I love the last paragraph after reading here and there about Nao and his time spent making everything compatible:
Quote
AptiQuant does, however, single IE out as not only the newly anointed Browser for Dummies™, but also as an expensive drag on web developers. "Any IT company involved in web development will acknowledge the fact that millions of man hours are wasted each year to make otherwise perfectly functional websites work in Internet Explorer," they noted when announcing their results. ®

This reminds me of a test between vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters.

I don't believe this.

Oh one more thing those non-meat eaters can get a carrot and...  :D

@Rusty> Actually, I spend a lot of time fixing *all* browsers... Because they're not all as good as Opera when it comes to following standards...
Of course, IE6 is the worst of all, but considering I'm spending less and less time giving a shit about it... By the time we're out, it'll be used by less than 10% of users, *and* most of these are in China and Korea anyway. Wedge's target is primarily English and French speaking countries.

Shame, because I'd love to have empirical evidence to support this conclusion.

We haven't finished discussing this... I still want to do it at some point

But whether we do that or not, I do think that Quick Reply should be available below every post. Only, as a small icon or whatever, instead of a header that takes the entire width.

I found this true - and very funny!

You see: Microsoft has refused to make the IE browser for us MACINTOSH USERS for a decade now (We were already too smart to use it 10 years ago!)

And I typically have 133 tabs open: one for each point of my IQ! And as fast as I close one two others get opened. I'm always wondering which window has the tabs that I'm posting a reply in at the moment ....

occasionally losing track of a thread ..... and posting an urgent reply a day late ....

I typically have half a dozen tabs open, maybe 20 or 30 if I'm catching up on old stuff... fairly sure my IQ's a bit higher ;)

I reiterate:

Microsoft TOOK AWAY our IE 5 after having a Squabble with Apple over some long moot point .... I can't get a decent Mac version of __________ from MicroSoft!

Even IF I were Jonesin' for IE on the Mac (HA!) I couldn't get a fix!  Keep that Active X demon (I'm sorry: daemon I think its spelled) away from my door!

And now insert SFX of a flushing sound as the world crappiest and most platform limited browser Flushes itself down itself!

And I originally guessed "Iron" for that 2nd one.

Good Riddance!

Ah, so you're a Mac user?
Oh, Yes! (But I'll GLADLY run Ubuntu on it! Am I up to 11.04? What is that? Natty Narwhal?)

I'm an IT guy with heavy HARDWARE Background - I KNOW Better than to buy a PC! ALWAYS bought a Mac ...  :thanks: :geek:

I will eventually upgrade from my 8 Core Work Station (MacPro3,1 runnin 10.6.8 or that lovely Ubuntu) to this 12 Core(http://store.apple.com/us/configure/Z0M4?select=select&product=Z0M4&mco=MTg2OTQ5OTk) (24 hyperthreaded virtual cores) Work Station.  http://store.apple.com/us/configure/Z0M4?select=select&product=Z0M4&mco=MTg2OTQ5OTk

Microsoft won't LET me have their Browser! And I'm SOOOO Grateful! I use OpenOffice 3.4 Dev and ThunderBird 6 (I'm settled in now) and - at last - Microsoft Office can GO STUFF ITSELF!  I don't even know why I let that Leech of a SilverLight plugin Live on ...

I HATE "Lion" (Mac OS 10.7.2) and I'm not Lyin'!  Install an Upgrade over a network - Without a Install and Repair DVD in Hand?!? Not on MY Watch! Not on MY Mac Either!!! Go FU<K Yourselves, Apple!

I'm pleased with the Tower Hardware they make ($15,000 for "get-out-of-the-way-you-slow-AlienWare-Slug" 24 core performance / 8 TB on inboard Storage / and 64 GIGS RAM: ECC Buffered RAM at That!)  Snot, HOT!

But their Software Offerings remind me SO Much of the days of BubbleGum Rock: useless crap but catchy any way. ("Yummy-yummy-yummy I've got Love in my Tummy"  (http://softwaresanta.com/smf/Smileys/ellow_yellow_christmas_edition/yuck.gif)). No use for it .....

And I really think both Apple and Microsoft are Dinosaurs. (MS - Stegosaur and Apple - Velociraptor) I'm not Happy with Either of them.

And I gave Chrome the Heave Ho when I found an Image containing an upgrade - on my desktop - from their remote server WHICH I didn't Choose to connect to OR Mount! Son-of-a-Bitch! Like it reached up my pants leg and grabbed my balls. Chrome/Picassa/Google Earth - ANY Google "Offering" got put through 'the shredder' AT ONCE! Not letting Google "Buy" me anymore free software 'cause I don't like their price! They got De-rezzed but Good!

No, they obsoleted it. IE 6 was, for its time, quite an improvement over IE 5/5.5. As for IE on Mac, they never really wanted to make it in the first place, just like IE for Unix. It only came along because in the late 1990s, they invested in to Apple and turned out MS Office for Mac, but it was never going to be long-lived - especially since most Mac users stuck it out with existing Mac solutions at the time.

You know you can make one yourself, right? Nothing says you can't do that. And you can buy it on USB stick, though there is a cost attached to that, because that particular stick also comes with a Leopard -> Snow Leopard licence (making it ~$69)

Not to sound like a fanboy but the reality is exactly the opposite. Mac's use PC hardware, there is hardly anything special about Mac's hardware. It's Mac OS X that actually makes a difference(if any).

Well, it is a very specific set of PC hardware, to be precise. It is possible to run OS X on a PC provided that it's an Intel and has similar/same type of graphics and sound attached...

Yes but you can buy off those from the market for half the price combined. You need an 4xxx ATi card or newer and one of newer Intel processors to run Mac on PCs reliably, have done it quite a few times before.

No, but you *can* run them on an Intel based PC. The only reason it doesn't work so well on an AMD is simply because the Mac hardware setup is all Intel based, so everything's compiled for Intel. Some stuff will work, some stuff won't, and some will be workably fragile.

Not particularly reliably. Like I said, some stuff will work just fine, some won't and some will be temperamental. A fair amount depends on how it was compiled, stuff compiled from the likes of gcc will likely be more stable and less glitchy, because it's not compiled with Intel specific optimisations for the most part.

That doesn't rule out the fact that it can be done, and many people do run it with enough stability for day to day tasks.

Oh, and Microsoft DID put some effort into the Development of the "Tasman" rendering engine (for IE 5/6 on Mac OS X) but eventually scrapped it. See the "Tasman" engine note over at Wikipedia.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasman_%28layout_engine%29 At the time there were high hopes for it.

(Huh. Entourage still used it.  So I've still got a working "Tasman" in my {unused} Entourage)

It wasn't meant as harshly as you felt it was (there was a smiley there). But there is something about writing in a different colour, different font style/weight and size that doesn't say "Hey, I'm different because I'm a unique individual", it's says "Hey, I'm different because I want to feel important."

In my experience[1], people who use a different colour, different font style/weight and different size are very firmly saying "Look at me, what I have to say MUST be important." Not that what you're saying is or isn't important; but simply that people who format things differently almost always do so to get noticed, not because they want to demonstrate their individuality.

This is based on over a decade of visiting forums, at least.
Quote
I know I'm different.

I celebrate it.
You, me, them, everyone. We're all different. We should celebrate it. But going out of your way to celebrate it by intentionally drawing attention to yourself comes across as less of a celebration and more attention seeking.

Yes, I remember Tasman. The problem is no different to the situation we have today: even if it were adopted into IE6 at the time, we'd still have the same schism that we see today between IE6 and 7, or 7 and 8, or 8 and 9. All the time the browsers have massive shifts in how they render things, people are going to hold off adoption, which means the new features don't hold water so much.

Opera's the classic example: it is widely considered to have a better grasp of the standards in terms of behavioural reproduction thereof than any of the others, but unless it goes mainstream and encourages the others to catch up, it ain't happening.

There are, even now, still places that push IE6 compatible stuff out the door, even as we approach a full decade since IE6 landed.
 1. And I'm willing to accept that you might be the first genuine exception to this rule.

The whole concept of 'I'm an individual' doesn't work when you realise that you're individual just like everyone else.

But like I said, you can be different to actually be different, or you can be different because you want attention. I have only met a very small number (probably <10) of people who do something to act or be different because they want to be individual, rather than attention seeking.
