For the next version of SMF4Mobile, I was thinking of converting it to the splitview plugin template, it offers enhanced supports for tablets while maintaining a nice compatibility to mobile devices.
Here's the official demo :

Please let me know what you guys think.
PS : I know this really isn't related to Wedge but I do plan on porting the theme so I guess it is somewhat relevant.
-
While your mobile theme works very nicely on tablets as-is, I can certainly understand the logic of having the split view.
That's the one thing about tablets that keeps it interesting - they're too big to really benefit from most 'mobile' things and too small to stretch out with the ever-increasing size of desktop stuff (even 1280 wide is considered quite narrow these days!)
-
I agree, that's why I've been thinking of enhancing it to offer support for a wider range of devices. What do you think of the demo itself?
-
I think that the split done verically is not the best design. A good solution can ba to split horizontaly, where the menu can be something like little tabs (with proper icons).
-
It is only split for large devices, for smaller devices it shows either screen depending upon what you click.
-
@dorje: The split is exactly how Apple's guidelines suggest for a device of the iPad's 1024x768 resolution ;)
-
I don't have a tablet... Care to share a screenshot?
-
Have a look at normal browser, it looks the same.
-
I didn't see anything special, hence my request..... :^^;:
-
I am confused, what are you looking at? The demo I linked or something else? The demo shows an iPad like mail layout where there is side panel for browsing and a main panel for actual content. I am trying to do a similar thing for SMF(And soon to be, wedge).
-
I only get one panel...
-
Then you should be having a menu link on the top left, you'll need a screen of above a certain width in order to see both the panels
-
here ya go
-
I only get the left part on Opera 11.50 in 1280x1024.
-
That's kinda odd, maybe an Opera problem? Can you try in other browser(Preferably webkit based).
-
I just tried again right now, and now it's working... (in Opera.)
No restart or anything. Don't ask!
-
So, what do you think of the UI?
-
Well it's nice ;)
But since you don't want to have it as a core theme in Wedge (from what I gather), I hope you don't mind if I'm not deep into it :P
-
I never said that I wouldn't want it in core wedge, but I wont push you guys to have it.
-
Oh my... I'm getting lost
Okay, I originally thought you wanted SMF Mobile to be SMF centric and a paid-for mod. That you want to make a Wedge version (actually I can do the conversion myself) is new to me, as well as it being free. :^^;:
Wine is working okay in my iPhone for now, and I'm still planning to make it look better, but I definitely like having an alternative.
-
I wanted to contribute something to wedge, so I'd allow my theme's wedge version to be free. As long as some smart-ass doesn't backport it. Plus, almost every big name forum has a mobile only theme(IPB, vBulletin, etc)
-
Smart-asses couldn't backport it, if only because it would be protected by our custom license... (Giving only Wedge, and you of course, the right to use it.)
You'll end up contributing, don't worry :) We're currently in a state where we're trying to finish a first alpha version... When it's more or less ready, I'll start into looking at all of the external code -- Thorsten's importer, your portal code, your mobile theme, etc... I just don't want to put more pressure on myself at that stage. (Maybe Pete will, of course.)
-
Here's an early prototype, its still buggy as hell but it is starting to shape up to be something useful.
-
Yup!
-
Looks very promising indeed!
-
Oh, I like that a lot!
-
It's great, Mr. H!
-
Well done!
-
Thank you for the feedback, I spent most of the day making it relatively more stable and now it seems less frustrating, still a few quirks but I ironed out most of the issues. I can now continue to convert rest of the theme to effectively use the splitview template.
-
That's a great looking theme.

+1
Looking great Mr. :)
-
I dropped this theme in Wedge, did a few nominal fixes and gave it a test spin and it seems to be working quite fine for the most part. I haven't actually ported it because SMF's version isn't finished.
-
Liking!

very well done! :)
-
How did you know its usable at 240x320?

Just surfed on with my mobile. :)
-
1.1 is still only on my localhost, what you surfed is 1.0. Although 1.1's gonna be better :D
-
So why say it's 1.1? I did notice the copyright.
-
You lost me there, which copyright says it is 1.1?
-
I'm talking about your OP.
-
So you're asking me why say version it to 1.1? Or why version it at all? In either case, because I like versioning things :P.
Anyway, what moderation/administration features are you guys interested in seeing this theme?
Answers saying full on administration/moderation will be frowned upon and I will come to your house and kill you.
-
-Ban button
-IP Track
-Close/Move/Split (they might be, but I suggest)

The most useful in my opinion would be ban user, lock topic, and editing and deleting posts. Moving and splitting topics would be nice too, but I think less important than the others.
