The last couple of days Wedge.org looks completly broken in IE11 (Windows 8.1). See attachment.
This was also before the updates on patch tuesday 12 aug 2014.
I tried with other themes in Wedge. All kind of settings in IE.
I deleted the Temporary Internet Files. I did reset IE to its default value etc.
So far no luck and I am stuck.
Anybody an idea?

Looks like the CSS just isn't loaded. Anything in the error console?

Original (Dutch)

Translated (Google)
SCRIPT1014: Invalid character
File: script-m-472042.js.gz, line 1, column 1
SCRIPT438: The property or method mime is not supported by this object
File: wedge.org, line 322, column 2
I hope this is what you mend
-
Did you clear your cache?
Is this only on wedge, org, or on your local install?
-
It happens visiting this site, Wedge.org
I have no local install.
Cleared Temporary Internet Files and Cookies multiple times.
Meanwhile I tested with IE11 on Windows 7 and three different computers. It goes wrong on all of them.
Nobody else seeing this?
Then I guess it must be something on my computers. But what?
-
Silly suggestion, but... Can you try switching to English?
I don't have IE11 on any on my machines. I'm only using IE10, because I'm more comfortable with its developer tools. Bummer!
-
Weddge.org and my forum work well from a Windows 7 / IE11 laptop. I'll try again with Windows 8.1 when I'll be back at home on monday.
-
Thanks for your message.
That would mean it's really something on my computers (1 Win 8.1 & 3 Win 7)
I hope I find time tomorrow to do more research on it.
-
Again, I think it's related to the language. But your error log indicates you're using English so I'm not sure.
-
Great, just saw that modern.ie offers VMs for IE11, so I might be able to just test.
-
Tried on VM Windows 7 + IE 11... Result: everything working great.
Now, if only Microsoft distributed VMs for Win8...
-
You're the second one reporting it's working with IE11 on Windows 7
I'm having the problem on three different computers running Windows 7 and IE11
So it's almost certain it must be something overhere.
The only thing all my computers have in common is the ESET NOD32 antivirus programm. So on one computer I deïnstalled it, cleaned the register, deleted the Temporary Internet Files and Cookies and started the computer again. No luck, still a distorted look.
As soon as I find more time I'll investigate further.
You mentioned changing language to English.
I will find out how and then try that.
-
Ah yes it could be a firewall or something...
Just remember; you need to determine what CSS file (*.css.gz) is being requested by your failed page (check out the page's source code), and why. (Try loading this file directly in your browser.)
-
I am having the same problem on different computers, for both Wedge.org and for my own site. This is with IE11 on Windows 8.1.
-
Does it work for you if you're disabling gzipping?
-
I don't suppose it'd help.
Seriously though, txcas -- I posted a suggestion right before your message. Why didn't you give me feedback on this..?
-
Wedge.org with Wndows 8.1 and IE11 is broken on my computer. My forum is not broken though...
-
Confirmed to be messed up in Win7 with IE11, also.
-
Win 8.1 IE 11 works perfect for me.
-
Pandos you seem too be running an old version of IE11.
Me and at least some of the others with problems run a newer version.
Edit:
I just deïnstalled KB2976627
Now I am on the version of Pandos and the site looks good.
Conclusion:
Microsoft change some things in IE11 with the last update that causes this.
Sorry Nao for not finding this out earlier and telling is was before the updates of patch Tuesday.
Probably the IE patch came a bit earlier than the rest,
-
Does it work for you if you're disabling gzipping?
This fixes the problem. I disabled gzipping that everything looks normal again on IE 11.
-
Sounds like an very old bug in IE.
In IE9 they have rendered mime types in a wrong way.
Also it's known that there are some problems with IE11 with the latest release.
Perhaps it's wise to keep this issue in mind and wait for the next update....
-
It is just Microsoft trying to control the internet, saying you do it our way, and make it work for IE or else....LOL
-
MS bug then?
-
If after the next update of IE11 it still goes wrong I guess you have to deal with it.
Then it's no bug but a permanent change.
-
Yeah, but Wedge does gzipping the 'proper' way...
Safari used to choke on that, too. They eventually fixed it. Wedge works around these old versions by simply disabling gzipping on old Safari's.
However, having to disable on Windows 8.1 + IE 11 is pretty weird..!

This problem is reported to MS IE team shortly after the release of patch kb2976627
(https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedbackdetail/view/950689)
One month past and another round of patches but unfortunately this problem hasn't be solved.
-
Apparently they say this can be fixed by changing the extension to gz.css instead of css.gz... Dunno. Can anyone test this, if you know how to change it..? I really don't want to install a pirate copy of Windows 8 and update ie11 on it just for that... (Because yes, I have no plans to upgrade from my legit Windows 7! And Microsoft doesn't offer an iso of win 8 for ie testing... Color me surprised...)
Alternatively, I could simply disable gzipping on IE11 (including on platforms where it isn't buggy, e.g. Win7), just tell me what you prefer guys...
-
Well I can test, perhaps tomorrow... if I get what renaming the file would mean. I guess it is server-sided. I'll try on an old useless forum I'm hosting  (E-T)
-
It'd require updating both some PHP and the htaccess, so no it's not easy to achieve if you don't know the codebase too well... ;)
(I always find it ironic that E.T., which was historically the *very* first forum to ever perm-ban me, ended up running software I wrote! :^^;:)

One month past and another round of patches but unfortunately this problem hasn't be solved.
So... Long night, nothing to do, decided to install an evaluation of Win 8.1 + updates to see what MS was up to.
Anyway, here we are... I'm with the '627 update (the one you mentioned), the rest is pure unmodified stock English Windows 8.1, and it's working just fine.
I'm currently installing all other updates (excluding the other ones for IE11 which I'll do much later), so if I can then reproduce, it means it's not due to '627, but to some other Windows update.
-
Installed ALL updates (except for anti-virus stuff, which I won't need because it's just a temporary VM I'll delete later today), and it still works perfectly.
See screenshot... Meh?
-
I am running Win7 and took a look with IE11 and all looks fine to me. :)
Although, lets not forget MS is trying to take over the internet and force people to do things the way they want it to be... :P
-
I'm very annoyed to announce that after my initial round of testing (i.e. installing an update, restarting, launching IE, testing wedge.org, bis repetita), even though everything worked, I then tried to access my local site and it failed to show the CSS and JS...!!!
For some reason, IE 11 kept the 'correct' cache on the disk, but if I specifically erase the cache, then it starts failing.
So, phase 2... Applying the fix. I simply swapped the extensions for IE, and it seems to be working now. Please delete your file cache, and test again!
I'm wondering if I shouldn't swap extensions for ALL browsers, rather than just IE... It seems to be working everywhere, but... What if we then discover another specific browser that fails to run these, eh..?
@BurkeKnight, don't forget, this problem supposedly only occurs on Windows 8.1...
-
Yessss. Wedge is working perfectly in IE11 now.
The problem also occurred with IE11 on Windows 7 and it's solved there as well.
Thanks Nao.
-
Tested again : everything looks fine frome IE11
-
@Nao
I'm sorry to kick this topic but since ± 2 days wedge.org is again broken as mentioned in opening message.
Still Windows 8.1u1 IE11
No problems in Chrome and Firefox

I've been playing with older files so it's not surprising. Don't worry I haven't changed anything regarding this. .
-
@Nao
Did you change anything last night?
If not, then finally Microsoft fixed it this patch Tuesday.
I am ^_^
