Title: Separating lock and unlock permissions
Post by: Arantor on April 30th, 2013, 12:17 AM
So I was going through my list[1] and I saw a mod that ensures only admins can unlock threads.

Now, I can't imagine this would be useful in every scenario but it seems to me that it'd be useful enough for some kinds of sites to have the lock/unlock separated into two own/any permissions rather than assuming if you can lock, you can unlock again.

Just a thought, just wondered what folks thought. It's not a killer feature, nor something I'm going to be that worried if I don't implement, but it seems like it could be a simple enough useful extension for a small enough cost.

(Don't forget SMF/Wedge do already understand the concept and difference between user lock and mod lock, i.e. where a user locks their own topic, they can unlock it again, but if a moderator locks it, the user won't be able to unlock it unless they're also a moderator)
 1. Yes, it's fairly well known that I have a list of every SMF mod and with annotations as to what I want to see in Wedge.

You know on one of the forums I used to admin it would have been nice to prevent some drama queens/kings from unlocking stuff they locked.

Edited to add: That said your feature sounds neat and plugin worthy though its Nao and your ship so steer it how you see fit!

I have nothing against the idea, it's just that I'm always losing myself in the sea of permissions in Wedge and SMF. Now, if there's a reason to implement this from a moderator's view, then of course it's potentially a good idea. ;)

There's a reason to implement it. I'm just not sure it's a *good* one yet.

I think it's better to add too many permissions, than too little. More permissions == more control (depending on the quality of the permissions, of course).

I'm all for a separation of those permissions, there are times you want someone to lock something but not unlock, and vice versa.

What would be really cool (*gets his ideabox open*), is if you could search through the permissions, just like you can search through the settings, but then in real-time. Not sure how much work this is, but it would really innovate I think.
