Title: New revs - Noob questions?
Post by: Nao on October 20th, 2011, 07:58 AM
The purpose of this topic is to give a safe haven for readers who:

- find interesting to read the 'New revs' topic,
- mostly don't get a word of it because it's too technical,
- would really like to know what this is all about.

Everytime you see a new revision that intrigues you, feel free to ask here for more details. Chances are, they're already available elsewhere so we'll just point you to them, and if they aren't, we'll take some time to explain -- we help you, we help ourselves.

So, go ahead, this is your topic!

You could have created it by yourself, we don't own topic creation rights, but I guess sometimes it's not a reflex ;)

Please guys, keep the off-topic stuff to a minimum, I'd really like for this topic to be helpful to non-techies...

Hi Nao & Arantor,

I have been here quiet a while. I follow voraciously all the new posts, although not understanding 95% but hey when I started it was 99%

Just like to say thanks for this Thread

I will be using it :D

Thanks for creating this topic Nao, great idea really. there has been many times discussion have taken a more technical turn and I'd much rather not interrupt the flow of the discussion with my questions[1].

Fortunately I've been able to keep up with much of what's going on by rereading things that dont grab me right away but going forward it's nice to have a place to raise a few noobish questions re development (new revs) without breaking he flow of ongoing discussions.
 1. heck I've even posted a question or 2 where the responses were more than I bargained for and it was much easier I read and kept up than to interject unnecessarily

Thank you. Great idea. :) I'll probably be using this topic a lot!

There is one thing that I've always wondered as I read though the new revs: What do some of the "bullet points" mean? Like I know that the ! are for bugs, + is any addition, but what is the * for?

Well, it's actually from the SMF changelog, seeing how both of us came from SMF development (in different ways) to here:
Quote
! Minor change or bugfix. (don't bother to log typos except between releases.)
 * Change like above, but affects templates.
& Change that affects a language file. (make two if it affects templates too.)
 + Feature addition or improvement.
 - Feature or option removal.
I tend to consider a lot of my changes as 'minor changes' unless they're huge additions or removals. In my case, I almost never use * or & because I almost never touch just those areas when I do anything, but Nao tends to do more subtle things than I do in that respect.

Woops. Sorry I don't use the smf type actually.

! Bugfix
+ Addition
* Modification
- Removal

Pretty much the standard way!
