Hello,
After looking on SMF + Aeva Media mod I got to this site somehow:)
Me and some friends is planning to setup a private forum(with a integrated image gallery) to share. SMF + Aeva looks like it would work, but it looks like it is not that integrated into each other, you can't easily take images from your gallery and put into forum threads.
Will that work better with Wedge?
And one thing i thought of, sorry if it is wrong mention it here. Now you get all these free online harddrives(dropbox etc), would there be an option to save space on your servers and use online space to store images on, like dropbox?
-
- Yes, Aeva Media is integrated and there's no way to remove it.
- No, it's not THAT integrated yet. Namely, the avatar and attachment system is still SMF's. I never got around to do the jump, as I estimate it would take several months to complete (and be satisfied with.)
- You can already easily put gallery images into forum posts with Aeva Media, as far as I know... Just post the corresponding 'smg' tag ('media' tag in Wedge) that's given to you in the item pages... You can even post an entire album this way, etc... There's a long help file explaining what parameters the smg tag accepts.
- There's already such an option in Aeva Media 2.x (the paid for version, which is integrated for free into Wedge.) However, it's not particularly geared towards this kind of activity. It simply allows you to specify the URL of a distant image instead of a distant video or local drive's image. Then it will create preview and thumbnail accordingly. So, hmm, yeah, I guess it can be seen as supporting dropbox etc, but it's not tested...
- As a reminder, Aeva Media 1.x and 2.x development ended last year. There are no plans to resume development for SMF. Any new features will be in Wedge only (but, to be honest, I have too much work on Wedge itself to be able to think of anything useful to add to its media area.)
-
Thanks for fast reply :)
I'm a noob at this, but thank you for explaining it.
I think we would like Wedge, but since there is no date for it coming, we might try something other meanwhile. Is there some maillist you can jump on to get a notification when it gets released?
And, do you know of another free forum + integrated gallery rather than SMF + Aeva?
-
If you want free, SMF + Aeva are possibly the best combination around. For paid, there's IPB.Board + IPB.Gallery. Possibly more that escape my memory.
-
IP.Gallery isn't that great...
-
Ah, see, I haven't used it. But I assume it integrates strongly into the forum...
-
Aeva media has no match even in paid forum land. It's just fact.
-
I will use SMF + Aeva until Wedge is finished, as I read someewhere there will be a converter from SMF to Wedge.
Am I just blind or is there a shotcut button to insert your images from Aeva Media into a forum post in SMF?
-
There's a shortcut to *upload* an image from within a post and have it inserted into your post immediately.
It is only available in Aeva Media 2.x and Wedge, though. Not that it's HARD to implement or anything... It's just a feature I didn't want to bother to write, so after numerous requests I wrote it for the 'commercial' version.

Where do I find 2.x? I can only find 1.4w, here http://media.noisen.com/album/180/
And is it possible when using (SMG Type=Album) to get all the pictures in the album in the post and not only 15?
-
- v2.x is the commercial version, you have to pay for it. Only, it comes with no tech support these days, because I've given up on SMF.
- I think it's a setting in the admin area.
-
I see, you don't plan on realese it free if there is no more support for it? Like a 2012 gift :)
Yeah, looked through everything, can't see any places that you can adjust the numbers, but i'm new to this so maby there is a place you can.

I don't know if those who paid for it would be glad to know that... :P
And anyway, my experience with Aeva and SMF has been quite... interesting, to be polite. So many people who thought I "owed" them a working gallery system... It was outrageous. Dragooon and I made Aeva out of passion. Passion is very important to make something so huge. I lost interest because it was too much hassle for the return on investment -- i.e. too many annoying users, too little money earned.
This has been discussed so many times already...Yeah, looked through everything, can't see any places that you can adjust the numbers, but i'm new to this so maby there is a place you can.
Actually, I haven't used AeMe in a long time. I wouldn't know for sure myself...
-
Ok, I understand that :)
Thanks for trying to help, much appreciated!
Hopefully someone else in here knows, and will let me know :)
-
The issue with using an smg bbcode and getting an entire album is that it hurts in performance terms.
-
Ok. So more than 15 pictures would slow down the server?
Would it be much work to make a patch that adds smg shortcuts to the forum posting?
Btw, Happy New Year:-)
-
Yes, loading more than 15 in a single page will have an impact.
As mentioned, there's already the shortcut in 2.x for uploading an image directly and adding the smg tag automatically, and the smg bbcode is actually shown at the foot of an item's page just ready for copy/pasting even in 1.x. Not sure what more could be done.
-
Thank you for explaining!
Yeah, hopefully there would be a small patch for the non paid version:) I'll just have to wait for Wedge to come out then!
-
I really can't see a patch coming out as neither Nao or I (who both have the skill) have the time or interest in doing it...
-
Short version: Aeva Media still works great. Enjoy it but don't ask too much of it. If anything, complain to the SMF team, not me. ;)
-
Ah...The price one must pay, for fame!
-
As one of the many people who have paid for Aeva, it wouldn't overly bother me if you made 2.0 "pro" free at this juncture. I know full well what has happened to stop further Aeva/SMF development and support. It may just get you more shouty-types who fail to notice that there's no support at this time though.
-
There's enough of those already, whining that Aeva isn't "maintained" as though they think they're owed it.
-

It's as free as can be ($5 or so.)
I'll never make it fully "free" because the fact that Wedge offers Aeva Media's pro features for free is a crowd pleaser.
Not that Wedge lacks crowd pleasers, of course, but I'd rather not take any chances ;)
-

Nominal fee, I'm cool with that too. At least it'll separate some of the chaff...
-
Anyone without a PayPal account, to begin with... For better or for worse, I don't know.
The $5 I mentioned was for Aeva Media, not Wedge...
-
Maybe that's a sign that we need more paid subs options?
-
We want wedge, we want wedge. We want it and we want it NOW
-
@Pete> How so..?
@Spr1te> Well, I was *hoping* to get the demo ready for late January, but it appears I only have two hours left to make it in time, so it's another milestone I'm going to silently skip... :P
Anyway, I'm getting closer to being ready for a release on Wedge.org. Not the source code, but at least the site itself. The fact that I'm working on a new skin is proof enough that I'm seriously planning to go online with it.
-
Quite simple... If there are other options than PayPal, it is less of a barrier.
-
I don't see myself implementing other payment platforms... And really, what I meant was, we're cutting ourselves from underage users and people from countries where PayPal and other systems are a problem, like Russia from what I've heard.
-
There is that to it, sure. But if the payment system can sanely support other platforms, why not?
The paid subs system needs a rethink because unless a payment provider supports something that's basically PayPal IPN, it's almost impossible to support properly.
(I'm aware that SMF's SVN had two other payment provider modules in it. I'm not sure what state these were in but I don't believe they've been BSD'd, so it's not even as if we can ship with those.)
-
I doubt they'd complain about the license if we included them, but if they didn't in the first place, it's probably because they don't work...
-
They've certainly not been battle tested the way others have, but the main reason for lack of inclusion was that they're not really up to date - and if they're not maintained for that reason, they're probably not maintained in other ways too.
-
I don't know if its intentional or been addressed already but the blueish separator (home/recent/random etc) in AeVa are a bit smaller than the pinkish ones behind
-
What?
(And if you're talking about a demo site -- please no links here :P)
-
nope, current Wedge.org
-
That bug isn't in Wedge at all
-
Yes, no need to report bugs that only show up on Wedge.org and not on the Wedge demo site, because obviously Wedge.org will soon be running Wedge itself... (As you can see from the new demo site I posted on the Friends board.)
-
Noted, I just thought it prudent to raise the issue.
Cheers

...and people from countries where PayPal and other systems are a problem, like Russia from what I've heard.
My parents live in France (Brittany for those that want to know specifics) and have no end of problems with PayPal and other online payment services - they have no house number (small rural community and such ;) ), and most online payment services insist on receiving a house number, and there are many that "auto-locate" their address and get it completely wrong because their address has accents in that are left off the auto-locate services...
