And another poll...
The stylings feature is described here:
http://wedge.org/pub/feats/theming/6673/stylings/
It has been suggested that we should use 'skins' instead, as it's likely to be recognizable by more users as the proper intent of the feature.
I don't really know what else to offer in the list of choices, so let's just vote between the two.
Also, the stylings folder is called /Themes/default/styles, which doesn't match the name of the feature itself, but I thought 'stylings' was a bit long (although it doesn't have any implication over your forum's bandwidth, because stylings are cached anyway, and loaded from the /cache/ folder.) Renaming stylings to skins would imply a rename of the folder as well. Otherwise it'll just stay 'styles'.

Just so we're clear on this: a theme is something which replaces the templates and underlying code. A style or skin is something that just lets you apply variations of style on top of it; in the same way most of the themes for SMF 2.0 are recolourings or purely stylistic variations on top of Curve, this would let you create variations on a theme easily in just the style code, and not have to touch the templates or the usual problems that ensue.
-
Yeah, that's the point... (1) you don't have to overwrite a single Wedge file, (2) it will remain compatible for as long as the theme's structure isn't changed too much (i.e. you don't need to copy the index template to another theme just to change your CSS.)
I should also point out that Wedge is very flexible in that respect -- you can also customize the original styling without touching a single Wedge file, and without adding a styling for that. Just upload a 'custom.css' file with your changes, it'll be taken into account. Mods can also add their own CSS files without editing anything -- either to the main index css by adding their file name to $context['css_main_files'], or as a stand-alone CSS file using the provided function (e.g. for a stand-alone page created by your mod and that isn't used anywhere else in Wedge, there's no point in forcing all pages to load more data.)
-
Yeah, that's the point...
I know, just clarifying for everyone :)
-
I say call them stylings!
It announces their extra capabilities.
-
The term "skins" is in wide common usage with a commonly understood common usage definition, but it's not Wedgic. Stylings sounds awkward, unsophisticated to the ear. Even the term "decor" would sound better....so...I checked Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, as "decor" sounds so HGTV to the ear.
Okay, so I'm picky.

Aaand this looks strangely like a bug:

Or, as an engineer would say, working as intended. :P
-
Not a bug! The footnote is part of the third choice... So it takes more space vertically ;)
Clara: Décor is a French name, so it sounds awkward to *me*

...and so I made a good choice with Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Certainly the footnote, but
What if the footnote would be in the second option? Would the "Users who voted this and this" still be displayed at the bottom?
-
I've added Décors for Clara. Just to show you what it's like ;)
-
That does look okay to me. :)

With the special character é it looks French but also a pain to type. It's commonly typed with a plain ole e for expediency. Just sayin'.
...and it currently stands severely outvoted. I don't think it ever had a chance in hell. :eheh:
-
As for me, you can see my Zend-brain coming out; there's a definite hint of Decorator pattern here ;)
-
I just can't fathom saying lets change the décor of the forum  design, skin, even styling maybe but then again I kinda don't care at all and will just conform to what's chosen :eheheh:
-
I suppose 'decor' does feel like something out of the 1970s!
-
Yup and it feels more like redecorating the house or something, but definitely not associating with websites of any sort
-
Yeah, sounds about right then.
-
I just tossed that out there. Time to just toss it out. It IS too HGTV. :thanks:
And it does look like somebody's trying to play his shoehorn.

all he's getting are footnotes

Sure do and I abuse them in SD too :D, my users love it in posts they even use it for their OT comments and keep them out of discussion so to speak
-
Well, add-ons are a core feature :)
So anyway, we seem to have ruled out decor, and possibly Mary Poppins' influence...

That's the goal ;)
@Pete> I removed these two 'funny' options. I would have stopped the poll entirely a couple of hours ago -- at the time it was like 6 or 7 votes for Skins and 2 or 3 votes for Stylings. It seems to have reversed, though -- now they're both at 8 votes. Uh. Well, whatever! Again, I've modified the poll to allow you guys to change your mind on the vote.
My current faves for both polls (i.e. what would make me happy): Plugins, Mods, Skins.
-
I voted for skins, not because other systems use it but because it describes what your doing more closely.
-
I voted skins--I agree with godboko. That, and WedgeRinds wasn't available. :P
-
Went for skins as well, just more use to that term than stylings.
-
Went with Styling s because it sounds classier.
Skins = slang.
-
Skins are a clear winner, so I renamed stylings to skins in revision 859.
Thanks everyone for sharing your opinion!
