Title: I can hardly wait
Post by: t34 on June 23rd, 2011, 09:59 PM
Okay, SMF 2.0 is final but whenever there's a new release, my forum gets all messed up when I upgrade.  I am not a programmer and it just putt along to try and figure out what the heck went wrong.  I am afraid to "upgrade" to 2.0, since the RC is working.

Guys, hurry up and release the WEDGE!!!!  I am 100% sure that yours will be far more stable and less buggy than any SMF release.   Waiting...waiting...on the Wedge!

Well, considering it'll be in alpha for a little while before it even reaches beta, we can't really guarantee it'll be any stable at that point ;)

The only thing we can guarantee is that we're doing our best! (And have been doing so for a year now...)

I subscribe the feeling. Any chance for us to mess around with Alpha builds?

No builds right now, public or private. At least until Nao or Arantor say so :)

Good things come to those who waits.

Okay, if you want a release schedule...

Two things to remember:

- This is MY own, personal, release schedule. I'm a big boy and I can set my own goals aside from Pete's. However, if Pete's work on Wedge is NOT finished, then it will be postponed. Same on my side, obviously.
- The dates are tentative. I'm not promising anything anyway. Just consider them as milestones that I set for myself as a goal in order to get myself back to work. I need concrete time frames to get to work. For instance, I originally worked on Wedge with the intent of releasing it on the week SMF2 came out -- but they took so long to actually do that, that we both decided to just go ahead and add more features that would originally have been in Wedge 2.0. As a result, we slipped past their own release date. Which doesn't bother me, really. As long as I have a schedule, I don't care about the release date.

So... In order of tentative release:

- Screenshots -- hopefully before the end of the month. I'm only waiting to get a relatively stable version of my new font overhaul...

- Demo site -- hopefully in July. We will release this when we consider the visual aspects are good enough and need a wider use to determine bugs to fix.

- Private alpha for our friends -- hopefully in August. September at the latest. Will depend on whether we can finish our current features on time.

- Public alpha for everyone (v0.1-0.5?) -- A week or two after that. During the alpha development, we may still add more 'big' features that were either forgotten/postponed from the early feature list (the one that's public now, see?), or simply that we came up with during the alpha.

- Public beta for everyone (v0.6-0.9?) -- Depends on the state of the alpha version. Hopefully before the end of the year. At this point we're not going to 'feature-freeze' Wedge, but we won't add any more 'big' features.

- Public gold release (v1.0) -- Depends on the state of the beta version. Hopefully before the end of the year. 2011. We don't really have a 'set' date for the gold release if only because our plan is to enable anyone running the beta to be able to update without any work on their side. So, basically, what you should be looking forward to is a beta release.

In the SMF terminology, I guess their 'betas' are our 'alphas'.
I can't conceive a beta without a prior alpha. Bêta in French means "silly". So it sounds silly to me :P

Well, whatever the release dates, I hope you guys take your time and polish Wedge. I really want this to succeed and be the best bulletin software.

Jesus Christ, this is why I never, ever, ever give out deadlines. Now we're going to have posts every other week asking when something will be released.

Used to have fun with my AeMe release schedule, too...

For you it's fun because you just got your driving license.

Wait till you are older and you have 4 kids in the back seat asking every 2 seconds "Are we there yet?"  :niark:

Nothing wrong with setting goals for one's self.

I personally would handle these kinds of posts[1] with the delete button.

Most here are the ones who have been following for a while. But I can see a whole influx of new users who are the ant's in the pant's types. They will be the same ones who will fill up support forums to the hilt.

Personally I have no problem waiting. Then again I'm "seasoned".  :o

Title: Re: I can hardly wait

We already have had those posts as it is... and I value the right of others to speak their minds, too much to just use the delete button even if my only response would be to tell them where to... y'know... stick it.

I appreciate that people are excited. I appreciate that people want to see what we've done. But keep telling us this... that's not encouraging. There is one person in particular who has really, really pissed me off with this. It was said today that we *hope* to get a really usable version out by Christmas, which is cool. Said person simply commented to the effect of 'is it new year yet?'

Most people here probably don't appreciate why I'm so pissed at this attitude. It's simple: most of the people who display such attitude do not give a flying fuck that we've had to spend literally years programming PHP to get to the level we're at. They don't care that we spend many hours designing, implementing, refining what we do. They just want the end result, and bollocks to the thousands of hours that will have to be put in to get there, or the thousands of hours already contributed in learning the existing code base.

That's why I'm so pissed about it: the people who are genuinely excited and not shouting from the rooftops, these people appreciate how much hard work goes in, and when it emerges the fanfare is sincere. But a lot of the people clamouring for stuff aren't doing so because they accept it, they're doing so because they want what they want, and that includes more stuff for free without them having to do any work or pay anyone to get it.

If it's any consolation, I for one appreciate what you guys are doing  Keep up the great work and like my granny used to say, the biskets will be served when they are done. Now go outside and play.  ::)

Haha, nice.  My Granny never made biscuits but that would have been fun.  I did spend a lot of time outside playing though.

I think a lot of us are really interested to see all of your hard work pay off, just some of us are dicks about it and some of us aren't.  :)

This post in my opinion is honest and professional. At least we know that there is a roadmap to check, see and wait.
We have seen what capabilities you guys have so even we wait for so long... is worth.

I live in Ukraine (it shows in my ip and the data specified in the profile)

There are more than two.

Canadians  reported more than 200 languages as mother tongues in the 2006 Census. These  include languages associated with traditional immigration, such as German,  Italian, Ukrainian and Dutch, and languages that characterize more recent  immigration, particularly those spoken in Asia and Latin America, which showed  the largest gains.
Chinese  languages are the third largest mother-tongue group: 3% of the population  reported a Chinese language as the first language learned and still understood  in 2006.

I did not mean to imply that I was "pressuring" anyone.  I love the fact that you are working countless hours without pay for the good of us.  My post was meant as a cheer leading post.  I know that programming is hard work.  Thank you for your work.  I'm sure that a lot of us would be willing to pay for the Wedge just as we paid for AeVa.  Again, thank you.
