Title: It's been released today!!!
Post by: Farjo on May 12th, 2011, 12:18 PM
No not SMF

Wordpress 3.2 Beta 1 is out. They won't support IE6 any more which ties in with Wedge's policy.

They report wanting to release the full version end-June, and I was wondering if Wedge will be like most (or all?) other free messageboards, having the line "it'll be out when it's ready", which I entirely understand, or if there will be public knowledge of planned releases.

I was wondering if we weren't Friday the 13th :niark:

More exactly, our policy is that IE6 users don't deserve the goods, but that one of us (I'd rather remain anonymous) is crazy enough to try and make it work in IE6 once in a while (and end up wasting a week just on fixing its many bugs.)

It's out when it's ready.
Up until December or so, we could have given a date because the project wasn't so deeply modified at the time (we mostly fixed SMF bugs, added a few minor features etc), but now it's in a state where many things were added, and many more are to come, and we'll have to determine when we can release a gold version and push the rest to a later version.
But really, it's far from the SMF situation. I for one am not much into the "feature-freeze" craze.

So, personally, I'm hoping (not planning) for a private alpha release in June, a public alpha in July-August, a public beta in late summer or autumn, and a final release before the end of the year. This is MY own personal calendar. I haven't consulted with others on this one, but personally I'd really like to be through with a gold release in 2011. Not getting paid for it is okay, but spending years full-time on something I'm not getting on, I don't know. Do you? :P

The new theme is ugly. Yuck
Didn't looked at the acp yet, though

I actually think it's an improvement... Twenty Ten always truck me as too minimalistic. I also like the space-saving new layout of the admin pages, although those require some tweaking, still...

It's less minimalistic than TwentyTen for sure -- but the buttons and most UI elements are ugly as hell. I'll stick with Tah on this one.

Haven't looked at the admin area either. (Not installing... Just using demos.)

Wordpress is pissing me off... They don't stop giving you stupid updates that no-one cares, because basically, the admin panel never changes (except some minor tweaks once in a while).

It's become a de-facto standard. They're probably too afraid of changing too much. That's also why their main theme is always so bland... By trying to appeal to everybody, you end up being exciting to no one.

The vast majority of WP's updates are security related rather than actual new features; other than the header bar that debuted in 3.1, I can't remember what was new since 2.7 or so (other than the theme, which is dull both in the main blog and the admin panel underwhelms me immensely anyway)

Multi-user, at least.

Nah, WPMU was around when I was looking for a blogging platform in 2008 when I first discovered WP.

Yes, but it was merged with WP main in 3.0.

They bumped major version number for THAT? Somehow I just lost a lot of what respect I did left have for WP.

Post by: Nao on May 12th, 2011, 06:43 PM
You... Didn't know? :^^;:
It was apparently a lot of work merging the two codebases... Personally, I thought it was the most exciting new feature in WP3, but when I realized its execution sucked[1], I just left it at that.
 1. Multiple tables added for each new blog, complicated permission management...

Precisely my point: a .0 release should grab me more than a single major feature that, IMNSHO, doesn't benefit a decent percentage of users.

Most things about WP's execution suck.

Post by: Nao on May 12th, 2011, 06:59 PM
It probably had other major features... I just don't remember them, since I don't use it ;)

And you use Chrome... Go tell them about your .0 theories :niark:

Oh, Chrome's version numbering is ridiculous.

I should note that I nearly called the next version of SD 1.1 even though it's about 10k lines bigger than 1.0... and 1.0 is barely 10k lines itself!

Post by: Nao on May 12th, 2011, 07:05 PM
What's it called now? 2.0?
Title: Re: It's been released today!!!
Post by: Arantor on May 12th, 2011, 07:07 PM
Yeah, considering that since 1.0, there is the permissions system, departments, custom fields, post-proxy ticket, and many more features I can't be bothered to list right now. (What's here is a modified version of about 150 revs after 1.0)

You could have renamed it to 2.0 just with a single one of these anyway. At least in the normal world ;)

Thanks for your comments on the timing Nao, very interesting. Not sure what "spending years full-time on something I'm not getting on, I don't know. Do you?" means but like Sisyphus everyone wants some achievement from their work.

I've briefly looked at Wordpress today and must say it's a bit pony. Is it really the best blog software around?

WP is the 'go to' solution but as ever 'best' is pretty subjective. I certainly don't see it as particularly good.

What is "SD"?

I like Wordpress to be honest. Maybe not the fastest or best, but for people who don't want to spend a lot of time managing or setting stuff up it is a pretty nice system. Plus lots of theme support and plugins too (despite WP not being so open to people making a few bucks doing so).

SD is SimpleDesk, see simpledesk.net - it's a helpdesk system I worked on a lot last year and have been working on the last few weeks - once the new version is done, I'll be backseat again.

The thing is, the reason why WP is so open to plugins is a little because of its system but mostly because it's actually very simple: there's almost nothing to it. You have this notion of "The Loop" being this massive system that underpins it, and structurally, that's insane.

I believe I've actually heard of SimpleDesk before. I'll check it out again though.

So do you dislike the wordpress loop?  :)

Post by: Arantor on May 12th, 2011, 10:19 PM
I do, I think it's absolutely stupid because it implies that every page follows the same basic notion of fetching content from the DB - except that in any serious system, you don't have that finely grained workflow, you just need to bootstrap, authenticate a user, then divert the controller to the relevant part of the system.

WP's model misses the fundamental basis of MVC (or indeed, anything approaching an extensible system that separates logic and presentation) at the cost of making it nicer for simpler uses and customisation. For what I was doing 3 years ago, WP was acceptable. For the sorts of things I might want to do, WP is essentially a toy rather than a serious foundation I'd want to go near.

That makes sense. I'm not a real programmer, just do some scripting and basic web design, but I've always thought that the loop was a bit strange. I suppose it would make sense in a basic blog, but WP isn't a basic blog anymore...
Title: Re: It's been released today!!!
Post by: Arantor on May 12th, 2011, 10:28 PM
Well, for a blog+replies, or a page+comments, I guess it might make sense, but that still makes the assumption you're not going to make anything else in that structure.

I completely agree with Pete. I didn't understand a word of what he said, but that seemed to make a lot of sense. 8-)

Nao: every single page in the user facing part of WordPress exists inside The Loop. Basically, imagine Display.php plus user authentication and bootstrap, and not a lot else; pages, blog posts, everything is served through a variation on this single basic structure.

It's not even as if it's designed to be done any other way, every structure is based around this one concept of The Loop.

Yeah but you lost me at bootstrapping... Remember how you already had to explain to me what it meant, months ago? :P

Anyway, I hate <? the_post(); ?>, too. It looks ridiculous to type. "The"? Who the hell thought of that?

To be fair, it's not surprising there's so much white there, as all but one panels on the dashboard are hidden.

Wordpress, that remind me, I'm thinking about designing my own blogging software not just for private use, for the public (MIT License).

Fair enough, but still I have to do something to build up on my portfolio. :D

Currently I'm building a slideshow plugin for WP exclusively for an American Football blog, yes I been hired by Americans (Floridians) to build a plugins for WP just in case you were wondering.
