Seriously, the guy in the suit is Craig Bierko, he's funny as hell in that stint. He also played Lister (yep) in the first US Red Dwarf pilot. The one that got canned. Ah ah.

Was kidding ;) Yet, she still does that in the show, eheh... (The entire show was about shark-jumping anyway. I've never seen a show so skillfully manage to make characters jump the shark early on, and then get to deal with interesting political/philosophical issues.)

Hahaha, well, lately been trying stuff out in the admin panel, playing with some ideas for enabling features from the same page (i.e. to cut off the whole concept of 'core features' from the start) but nothing I really *like* for that has come out.

Maybe when I've done some more tidying I'll give it another go with a fresh mind.

Honestly, though, I'm not sure which is *actually* worse.

DNF, yes, 14 years in the making. But it's had various legal issues hanging over it owing to companies going bankrupt and rights transfers and so on.

SMF 2.0... 5 1/2 years in the making, releasing 'minor' release candidates every 6 months...

Well, it would imply that the SMF team wil finish up the licence stuff and then proceed to fix 40+ bugs (or at least be comfortable with marking them as 'things we'll fix in 2.1' like they did with dozens before it) - inside 2 months or so.

Even if the licence stuff were dealt with today, that means they pretty much have to fix 2 bugs every 3 days. Somehow I just don't see it.

See, that's one of the reasons I'm wary of publishing a demo of Wedge right now... I can imagine the conversations at the SMF team.

"My, it's really good... And that's their vanilla release? Uh oh. We can't compete. We need to rework our stuff."

And then 10 years later......... "Wedge? We beat them. We managed to prevent them from releasing it. We won fair and square! Or close to. Well, of course it meant we never released a new version of SMF but it was the price to pay. I wouldn't do it any differently."

We talked about it, actually.

The honest answer is that we'd spend 6 months writing really dull code that would bore the ass off us before we got to anything fun, and knowing as we did that SMF 2.0 would open the code up, it seemed like a no-brainer.

I will note that we even talked about talking to Unknown and co to see if there was any possibility of using SMF 1's code in the event that SMF 2's was a no-go, or even just to get the rights to fork it and be done with it, on the theory of 'better that than nothing at all'.

I think we actually made the right choice; SMF isn't perfect, but it's the nearest thing out there to it, in our opinion. Why reinvent the wheel when most of the wheel isn't broken?

To implement either would be a major, major rewrite. SMF (and thus Wedge) is already tentatively MVC structured, but it could easily be more thoroughly concrete in that direction (only earlier today, there was a discussion about an idea that might have gone into SMF 3 that I am interested in pursuing that would help in that direction)

SMF's DB layering is primitive, it's designed to basically fudge MySQL queries into PostgreSQL and SQLite, well we removed most of that, but in order for us to viably use a real abstraction layer, the schema needs to be overhauled first, and need to get rid of so many FIND_IN_SET calls for matching :o (Yes, the list of secondary groups a user is in is stored as a comma separated list in the members table directly, just for an off-the-top-of-my-head example)

Some of the DB structure changes have already begun; board access isn't stored in the boards table any more for this reason. Membergroups is the other biggie that needs to change.

BTW I have this 'aeva' field in the members table... Maybe I should rename it to something like 'options'. This is to potentially have an unused field in the DB whose sole purpose is to provide the ability to store non-searchable personal settings for members. (i.e. through serialize.) However, I don't know if it has a point or not. I mean, we could just as well store anything into the proper options table... (I just kinda like serializing stuff. It's in my blood.)

Putting it in the members table (and thus yoinking some of it out of the themes table) strikes me as generally a good idea.

Performance wise the cost is not too significant; if it were the only column in the members table that was a text column (as opposed to a varchar) I'd definitely be insisting on it being a separate table (whether that's one row per member or one row per setting per member is another matter)

Don't forget, we already have the themes table doing that, and while there's a semantic issue, it's worth remembering that for a lot of it, anything stored there for the user will be loaded automatically for them on bootstrap, so unless you have a lot of settings, it might be worth just reusing that.

serialize is good, but I've recently been hearing a few concerns about performance of it (especially compared to the json_* functions), though it's incredibly convenient for storing variable schema information (e.g. log entries that may or may not require more data than is normally available)

Apparently they can be faster than each other depending upon the size and type of data.

Yup, textual content is processed slower than numeric content in the JSON functions from everything I've seen.

Would still be interested to know how unserialize and json_decode performed rather than serialize and json_encode; I spend less time writing that data than I do reading it, invariably.

Anything you'll upload via the profile's avatar area will be in that special album. Then the avatar area will show you the list of avatars and you'll be able to pick from them, just like you'd be able to browse the xkcd set.

Bit of stats...

386 days after we started work on Wedge, we reached today the 1000th commit milestone.
That makes for an average of 2.6 commits a day :)
Busiest months: september 2010 (over 150 commits, mainly to remove many outdated SMF features and fix its bugs), december-january with about 120 (january was when I wrote the CSS preparser so it's also my best month with about 90 commits), the global monthly average is about 80 commits (excluding the end of august 2010 and this month).
Slowest month was by far June 2011 with about 30 commits.
Of all commits, 71% were made by me, mainly because I spent all of that time on Wedge when Pete had other commit-ments (check out his work on SimpleDesk).
The diff patch between revision 1 and revision 1000 would represent about 6 megabytes, i.e. pretty much the size of an SMF install. We added 554 files, deleted 161 and updated 259.

That's all I can get without resorting to command-line stuff :P

Yeah, the plugins stuff was enormous, and I guess Class-WebGet wasn't a few lines. But I keep finding myself doing a bunch of little commits like tonight's - though I probably should bench the difference in bbc parsing with that change, it cuts down string slicing once per tag evaluated (or more accurately, once per bbc opening character)

I just don't know.

Hmm, I understand the reticence, not least because there is simply so much that interacts with it, it has so many consequences, and most of them have to not only be gotten right, but to avoid making a hash of it, most of them have to be figured out in advance.

I don't have a problem with releasing the demo as it is publicly (but not releasing a downloadable demo yet, there's still stuff too broken, like board access not having a working UI) and doing that after the demo but the longer it's left (and in particular after 1.0), the harder it's going to be to do.

Much as I stated with the dropping-bbc-in-favour-of-WYSIWYG, it's something that if we're going to do, we pretty much have to do it now rather than later.

The converter can be fixed up after the event. The core support, though, can't - because if it's left past 1.0, it's not only importing but upgrading that's going to be problematic - and that's a scenario I don't want to go down if at all possible, just because of the nightmare scenario it causes generally. Far better that we put the core in the core and have the converter deal with - measure twice, cut once, rather than measure three or four times and cut twice.

I've been using a computer in some form or another since I was about 3... I'm 28 now, and every one of those computers had a QWERTY keyboard :D On a more personal note, one of the earliest programs I remember was one my dad did (which sadly, I don't seem to have any more :() which taught me how to spell my name because it would ask for a letter and each time you pressed the right letter it drew more of a house.

This may not be the best spot to post this, but I just had a idea about posts... So when you post your post count goes +1, the downside is that other people (and yourself) don't know what post count you were at when you posted. It might be useful to have a option to show overall post count and postcount to date of that post... Just a thought.

Eh, the site I'm allegedly working on at present (hence I have time, hahahahhahhaahahahah) has its own achievement system and somewhat not unintentionally, it resembles like Steam's achievement screen.

An award system of some kind was always on the cards to be implemented (I vaguely remember Live saying that he's doing one) but I at least haven't gotten round to it yet. To me there's at least one dependency to be figured out yet.

Well, there are some days when some topic will turn into a real-time chat... Same at Elk's, really!
The only reason my postcount is so hight, is because I *try* to answer everything, and 'complete' my task list of unread topics.

As for Pete, he's always been the chatty one. Able to speak type volumes for hours on end, I've never understood how he managed to keep up. And when you'd be beaten on this forum, you'd go somewhere else and notice he was also involved in a huge flamewar on that same day. Then you'll flee to somewhere else, and there he is... Quite scary, really.

So I just talk online. People are then free to skip paragraphs or my entire posts. Win-win.

As for language skills, I used to be a journalist so I'm pretty good at French... and at the same time I was a pro translator (Japanese to French), but in truth I've always been better at English. Watched subtitled movies since I've been able to read. It helps a bit I guess. But still, I'll fuck up my grammar from time to time. But it's okay. What matters is that people get your point, you're not trying to write a novel and get a Pulitzer. ;)

Well I never notice post counts. Anyway missing by 91 once you have 15k is not really missing. if it was 15150 then it would be missed and only recognizable at 20k :P
