Title: PM Quoting
Post by: icari on April 22nd, 2013, 01:02 PM
not exactly a bug but a missing feature. i find it useful to be able to quote a pm that has been sent if i need to send it to someone else, or send it again to the person that it was sent to as a reminder. in wedge there is only the possibility to delete a sent pm, not quote or reply to it.

AFAIK, no SMF-based software ever allowed to do that.

And yes, it has annoyed me a couple of times, too... ;) (Not being able to quote my own sent PMs.)

in smf you can quote and reply to a sent pm with no problem, it is just an issue in wedge.

I have just had a quick look and I have two PMs in my inbox, one I sent myself just now which has no quote option but in an older pm I have from June 13th, 2012 there is the quote option.

i mean the sent box not the inbox. or do you mean use conversation mode which would show the messages you sent?

is this a 2.1 only feature? i have not had issues that i can recall quoting a pm i sent to another person to someone else with smf 2.0.

imo this is a dumb feature if it was added to 2.1.

It has never been like that.
You cannot quote your own PMs in SMF (or better you can try to quote them, but you'll get an error message the moment you will try to send it.

actually that is not true, i just did that a few days ago with no problem at all.

actually on sm.org if you quote a pm that you already sent the next screen does not have a recipient filled in so you can send the message to anyone.

I filled the report above after I faced the issue at sm.org...

Just to be sure I tried again right now and if you click "preview" you get the error message.
Funny enough if you click "send" it sends the message... LOL

then that would be why i did not have an issue... i dont usually preview a pm i am sending before i send it.

i tested a preview with a quote from a pm to another user and no error message [on sm.org] but then this issue/bug should be discussed on sm.org and not here

Maybe I'm not seeing how to do it here yet, but I sent a PM to myself yesterday (I do that a lot for my own notes) that had an embedded quote from another forum in it. When I went to to quote it so I could use it in a post, there was no option to do this that I could see. I could have copied all the text but that wouldn't have reproduced the quote properly.

Can I not quote my own PMs for other uses?

Thanks.

OK - I didn't think it was a bug just not me being used to things here so I didn't want to post a bug report. But yes, I send myself PMs all the time using SMF 2.0.4 and then quote myself. I don't see that ability here.

Ideally, the PM area should behave like a 'private' topic, I'd say...
We can have these now, with topic privacy. i.e. you start a topic, set it to Contacts, and only your contacts will be able to see it. Once I get around to finishing my buddy rewrite, you'll be able to put people into various groups, so you can choose to have topics only for your family, only for your friends, etc... (I don't know how I'm going to handle that yet, though... Ah ah.)

But, err... I lost my way. What I meant is, we should have only the 'convo' view available, and show messages using the same code, i.e. the Display template... Or maybe, just ditch the PM system and instead create a special board which will get the private topics, but then you risk losing access to a topic if you're suddenly removed from the contact list, hmm........ :-/

PM privacy is not per topic the way topic privacy is, it is necessarily per message because of things like bcc and of course whether people have deleted their message or not.

Hmm yeah, that's true...

Well, I was thinking mostly about how to show the data, and then thought of doing a 'special' topic type internally (remember my floating topic concept, uh..? ;)), and then you came and reminded me it wasn't exactly possible... :P

Technically it should be controlled by the board type rather than anything else but PMs are special.

There are arguments pro and against floating boards, but...

Actually it does make a lot of sense if it's controlled by the board itself rather than anything else - keep privacy at topic level but make everything else board level for presentation.

The biggest hurdle then actually becomes performance management, right now the board access setup is a performance bottleneck if you have too many boards. Need to figure out a way of fixing that.
