Title: Hello
Post by: bigguy on March 4th, 2018, 08:44 PM
I hope this is in the right place. Some of you should know me. I used to be a SS at SMF. I run my own discussion site now and that's about it. I didn't post a link cause I didn't think I would be allowed. Just thought I would drop in to see what's going on on the other side of the fence. Hello all. :)

Hi Bigguy,

Good to see you here! This place is not very active I'm afraid which is a shame because it is awesome software!

@Nao  pops by occasionally.

Thanks, yeah I am starting to get that impression. It looks like  good software. Unfortunately I don't think I will be using it if there is no support or an active community. Nice to talk to you again. :)

There is a other Forum Software coming up .. also a SMF clone but more features and function.

Look at PortaMx Forum(http://www.portamx.com) ;)

I saw your site yesterday and it looks impressive for sure. I will be looking more closely at a lot of options I think.

Hi @bigguy,
I'm fine with competitor/anything links being posted.
Wedge is no longer 'improved' but it's still maintained when a bug is mentioned. Just look at the activity feed at github.com/Wedge/wedge, it's just fine.
I mostly maintain Lestrades.com which is based on Wedge, so whenever I fix a bug in Lestrade's I try to think of backporting it to Wedge. Win-win.
The only 'active' SMF-based forum platform I'm aware of is ElkArte. Plus it's made by cool guys. I prefer Wedge over it, of course, but it's obviously because I built all the features I wanted into it. There are simply no further features I'm interested in, so I'm not implementing anything.
Plus, seriously, I spent 5 years working fulltime on Wedge for no rewards... No one can expect me to keep maintaining it, but I'm still on it from time to time.

Hi Nao. I was always watching Wedge. I would stop by from time to time to see what was up. It's all very impressive. I am sorry there is no more active development. I hate to hear you put all this effort into it for no reward. You did get more experience though and made a lot of good friends I bet in the process. Plus ya made a nice lookin forum software for sure. Kudos to you man. I might still install it to play around...always wondered what was in the admin panel, lol. ;)

Well, one can't win every time. I had a winner with Aeva Media 2.0, but releasing a full-fledged free forum system that would include Aeva Media 2 for free in it was apparently too much goodness for everyone to comprehend... ;)

No long-term friends, and no work experience (it just confirms that I'm a pretty good coder with a vision and the ability to deliver.)
It did help me get less disappointed when Lestrades.com turned out to be a failure due to much inferior competition with way more traction... (Did I hear 'SMF'?)
At least it's not my fault as a developer. And I never tried to assume the role of a marketing specialist, whether it be at wedge.org or lestrades.com, so... I'm putting the blame on whoever SHOULD have done the job. :P

Yeah, it was pretty nice. Arantor did a pretty good job refactoring a lot of things there. (And me redesigning the controls. ;))
