Front Page – Something other than a board listing.
« on May 21st, 2011, 11:17 PM »
I know you all have mentioned there is a possibility for a portal in the future. So I have been thinking, is there a need for a portal?

Anyway I was thinking, and I don’t know how simple this would be. How about a configurable Front Page, this front page could grow into a content management system over time, but could start simple.

It would start out as a simple configure page with a few options:
  • Normal Board listing and no Front Page
  • Blog board set to default (Shows the blogs from the board set)
  • FAQ Board set to default (see above)
  • Board set to default (see above)
  • Gallery set to default (see above)
  • Template Override (For advanced users)
The Template Override would allow advanced users to show whatever they want on their front page. Be it a set of blocks, pulled content, what have you.

Long term this could lead to a pages module/add-on for static content, an articles module/add-on for more dynamic content (could have different article types with different fields ect ect.)
Thank you,
Boko

I use a portal because I don't like landing on the boardindex and all I use is the frontpage, no side blocks anywhere in the forum. I display a welcome block, only the topics considered news and announcements, a few random images from the gallery and that's about it really. So what's described above would work just fine for me.

Template overrides aren't needed per se-- could simply be a page pulled through SSI.php.
Wedge.org currently uses the same method as Noisen though: I hacked into BoardIndex.template.php to show my custom stuff in it. It's a bit ugly and won't be done this way in Wedge, of course.

Thing is, Dragooon is working on a portal for Wedge right now, and I do see myself including it in Wedge eventually -- he's a capable coder and honestly I could do with extra developers because it seems like it's never going to end for me, eheh.
So, we'll have to see.

-sigh-

A front page would not be the same as a portal. It would be a front page, and customisable but still JUST a front page...
agreed, but to me who doesnt know a <div> from a <Li> - it would be a great start to how I want my front page to look.

I am working on a simplistic portal/cms which is extensible enough to cater enough amount of needs. I'll be resuming work on it in a day or two, next up is pages.
Simple is good :)

Cheers

A portal is just a front page. Haven't looked up, but it probably comes from the French word "portail", which translates to "front gate", really... :^^;:

Anything else is not related to a portal per se, but is considered "portal business" because other portal software did it. (Pages, etc.)

I'm not very excited with the idea of considering pages to be part of a portal process, really.
