did not find this in FaQ
« on April 3rd, 2011, 06:16 PM »
sorry i am a amateur webmaster and currently are using SMF 1.1.13 for my community site. I asume you understand the reasons why i choose SMF in the first place (install methodes for mods and such) but got really happy with it thanks to Aevea Media. my favorite mod. So i waas in my admin area and noticed in my aevea configuration page that future releases would only be available in wedge.

aaargh was my first thought (never heard of wedge before)
so i click the link, get here and read a bit about troubles with smf and the reasons for this fork.
Gentlemen i congratulate you on your dissision but you provide me with a difficult question.
As amateur i am not that good in changing from one board to another without losing my data, will it be possible to install wedge over my current smf installation somehow so i don't lose all my data, uploads and gallery's?

like i said, not a pro but i do really not want to lose Aevea

i do wish you all the best, good inspiration and a huge user base when you go public :)

The simple answer is yes, it will be possible to import everything from your current forum into Wedge. I thought we had answered it though...

From what I heard Wedge will have an "importer". You can install Wedge side-by-side of your SMF Forum to see which you like better, and if you choose Wedge then it will import all of your data to your new Wedge forum.

And since Avea will be cooked into Wedge i'm sure that your current Avea info on your SMF forum will transition just fine. :)

Edit: ninja'd by Arantor.

You might have been ninja'd, but you explained it better ;)

Yes, that's the plan - generally, to be non destructive, so that you import it alongside the existing site, and if you're happy, move the forum into the place of the old one.

The other benefit of having it like that means it's possible to write importers for all kinds of things, not just other forum systems - but other gallery systems, other mods and so on

I might have overlooked it if it was mentioned, did only search the faq topic for this tbh. I understood that some/most theme's and mods from SMF wouldn't work hence my fear i would lose all.
glad to hear an import function will be available :D

No SMF themes or mods will work at all, other than what we directly add to the core, the changes already for this have gone beyond the point where a standard package will work.

In theory an SMF mod could be set up to support both but in most cases it will be a rewrite of the mod anyway.

And we strongly suspect that many modders will actually drop their SMF version when they realize the Wedge version requires much, much less tech support to give. That'll be worth the hassle of making the rewrite.

Honestly, it was like making the jump from 1.1.x to 2.0 modding for me; even there, I found so much less hassle involved, and the recent versions make it modestly usable for doing big stuff if you're really in tune with how SMF works. (As SimpleDesk is proving, a great many things can be achieved if you're in sync with SMF's mindset)

But yeah, I'd like to think that it would be worth the hassle since it's 'do it once and then it's done' or at least that's the plan.

It's Aeva, though, not Aevaveavaea :P (Gesundheit!)

Yeah, I may still release one last version of AeMe 1.x, I'm not sure yet. A "final goodbye" version with a few features from the commercial package. I'm not sure yet.
The only thing I'm sure of, is that Wedge will have the commercial package. (Oh wait, maybe I should specify that in the FAQ :P)

The opposite would have been surprising. The SMF team have made their best to make sure no one can hear about us. They edit everyone's signatures (without warning) to remove links and prevent them from discussing it over at their boards. Even though we have yet to release anything, of course...

They say it doesn't clash with their Core Values. I beg to differ... Just the fact that they didn't even contact me personally...

It will import all data from AeMe. Normally the table structure should remain the same so it'll just be copied over to Wedge.

As I said elsewhere, I'm not hoping for a huge user base, because that represents extra support work and I have my hands full (and everyone knows how bad I am at support anyway), but I could use the inspiration yeah :)

True dat. I hated doing the conversion at first -- and then after that, I just couldn't look back!

I am sorry, will not spell Aeva as Aevea again :) and well maybe not a huge user base then but fr the rest it still stands, lots of luck, wisdom and godspeed with the development of this fork. I will keep an eye out for releases and give it a try for sure

You won't have to spell it for a long time anyway, since it'll lose its name when it's part of Wedge ;) It'll just be Wedge Media, and only the internals (language files, variable names etc.) will retain the aeva prefix, for the sake of good ol' days.

Will it be possible to import from SMF 1.1.x too or just 2.0?

Fry: Don't worry, Bender.  There's no such thing as two.

There are no plans to directly import from SMF 1.1.x at this stage, so you'd tend to upgrade to SMF 2 first.
