The Pub / Re: Pretty quiet here
« on February 13th, 2014, 02:53 AM »Well, there are still a couple new bugs being reported per day, but yes, I'm trying to go through the log of existing bugs I hadn't looked into yet... There are a lot. I took tonight's bug report from Farjo's recap post in the 'Preparing for an official package' topic.
I need to appoint someone or some people to maintain an official "Nao, this needs attention!" topic for me... :P And strike out things that I've worked on, etc.
Heck, there are also issues on the github repo (from Xarcell)... :-/
Plus, all of the issues that weren't closed but were actually incorrect bug reports.

I usually take branding pretty serious. When my clients come to me, I always request a business plan(which always includes branding info). This helps not only you, but those trying to help you, and fans of your brand. Of course, branding can change from year to year, but you don't need multiple flying about at one time. SMF has wasted a bit of my time because they don't have any branding information available. I'm not saying it's their fault, but I was just trying to help.
By having proper branding, it helps you, and those trying to help you.

I like the first one of the three you posted. Although I have to ask, do you intend to use that shade of purple in your default theme design? You should, and if you are not planning on it, then it should be changed.
In the poll, I like the fourth one the best. Since Wedge has been around, I've always imagined wedge in earth tones. I actually like the logo at the bottom of this page best of all.

Development blog / Re: Now with 97% more visuals!
« on July 26th, 2011, 10:41 PM »You're not making any sense. You say you like the admin panel with its dozens of icons then you say you don't like icons. Then you criticize our use of icons in the action area when smf does exactly the same.
Also, the action area was changed last week with the addition of a mini menu to give more space overall. But I'm sure you'll find fault in that, too. I do my best but some people always know better. Why don't you go ahead and try making a smf fork yourself? ::)
Yes, I like the admin panel better than SMF, it's looks "cleaner". However the post itself doesn't look cleaner than SMF. That is a matter of "my opinion". It's your fork, you make it how you want it. I won't bother you with petty details again. I don't want to sit here and get into an ego battle with you about the technically of my feedback.
I will just keep reminding myself of what you said in the beginning. You and Pete are designing the software to how you guys would like it, not how everyone else would like it, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I was just excited about the development of wedge. It won't happen again, as I will keep my opinions to myself.

« on July 26th, 2011, 08:25 PM »What exactly looks bad to you?
Can you do it better?
Theme images are mostly gone yes. They have been for a year. Possibly the very first change I made in Wedge.
It seems icons were added(to every link it seems), which I think are unnecessary. It creates clutter, and if you removed them it would look more "clean". I'm talking about all of them. Do you really need icons beside of "quote" and "modify". What about in the sidebarm in the titles, do they really need icons? What of the menu, links with a dropdown have 2 icons, one on each side.
Text strings could use some changing as well, similar to what you have already done here. They should be:
- Show Unread Topics
- Show Unread Replies
But then, there are alot of text strings that need to be changed if wedge is similar to SMF.

I like the layout of the admin panel, but the rest of it looks terrible. Why does there have to be an icon for every link?
I also hope you guys plan to remove as many of the theme images as you can, most of that can be done with CSS now.

Try http://try.powermapper.com/demo/sortsite.aspx
It's just a free tool I use. It shows all pages with SEO issues and the link to the standards as such. Like I said, just a tool. I learned alot from it, and changed some of my HTML/CSS coding ways...

Other software / [Flames] Re: Dream Portal
« on April 1st, 2011, 07:47 PM »Because at the time we were looking at it, it was the only one that had a forkable licence, and seeing that live's around here, it sort of made sense to consider it.

« on April 1st, 2011, 07:44 PM »I'm afraid DP is quite dead and there's nothing we can do about it. May I add that we'd rather not have Dream Portal flames around here?
I only moved this topic among others to the public area because I made some mass topic moves and barely read the contents (only checked that it didn't have any private stuff in it.)
Regarding DP, it's bad mojo to us.
Last year, at the suggestion of Arantor, they chose to go BSD.
Then, when we started discussing writing portal features for Wedge, Dream Portal came into it and we decided to look into forking it for Wedge, since it's allowed, and we already had one of the DP developers onboard (and one of its project managers IIRC).
Well, turned out that the Dream Portal project lead(s) was/were adamantly against it... And when you start questioning your very own license, there's a problem with the way you're dealing with your project.
In the end, we just felt this behavior was too childish that it could hurt the quality of the work that its developers put into it. And we decided against using Dream Portal at all.
In the end we'll probably write everything by ourselves. It will take time but that's what we get for playing things fair and square. :P (It's a good thing I wrote AeMe, innit? It would be awful if I couldn't reuse it eheh.)
Why not join the team and help write 2.0 version of it that works with wedge?

We obviously have to different opinions. No point in arguing over it.

Mobile phones with full browsing support and Touch Screens change things really.
H1, H2, H3 isn't really needed if your doing HTML 5 <header>/<section>. That's even better.
I'll argue the image height & width though. Without it, too much page jumping going on. Especially at slower speeds, or those with latency/server issues. Every little bit helps...
Alt attributes are still needed, even though they are not a requirement for HTML 5 Doctype. Again, mobile phones, ipads, some netbooks, will not cache or even load most images over 25K. So from there, you see the problem. Same goes for height/width.Quote from Arantor on March 31st, 2011, 02:08 PM I completely disagree with about 80% of what was said there. But hey, it seems your mind is set, so there's no since in arguing about it.

I was wondering if you guys have made any steps towards improving SEO?
Like the proper use of headers(in proper order, H1, H2, H3), alt attributes that aren't empty, image width & height attributes, and titles for input elements that do not have a LABEL.
Even a default Privacy Policy and Can-Spam Act of 2003 Information on how to unsubscribe from the newsletter, PM's, etc(all email notifications). Both are required by law in most places. I think I read somewhere that 80% of sites don't have them :P
Also, proper "Contact Us".
